The images below show the 1910 John Parkinson design for Central Park, which was renamed Pershing Square in 1918. The park was torn up in 1951 to build a parking lot and bomb shelter, and when re-opened was mainly open lawn, with benches around the perimeter. Later designs were even less hospitable.
